Parks History
BETTER SKIERS. EVERYDAY.
A great history....
The program grows...
Back in the winter of 1959, the Milwaukee Journal started ski instruction at
Curry, Dretka and Whitnall parks. They also gave instruction at several indoor
facilities including Washington and Wilson parks. This led to some limited ski
racing at these parks with rope tows. However, in 1963, the program was
cancelled. Yet, from that early program, under the guidance of Lee Hinytz, kids
Club. Thus, the Club was founded as an independent ski racing organization
with Mr. Hinytz as its first president.
Council Parks. The program was called the MMSC Junior Ski Racing Program originally consisting
of five skiing clubs, including:
Alpine Valley, Heiliger Huegel, Milwaukee, Parks and Scotsland.
Over the years, we have seen clubs come and go (Americana from Lake Geneva, Chestnut from
Galena, IL, Sundown out of Dubuque, IA, Wilmot and Snow-Star), but the core of the competition
remains the same. In 1993, difficulties developed with the MMSC, so Parks (and the other clubs) left
to form what is the Wisconsin Junior Racing (WJR). Today, there are five ski teams that make up
the WJR: Alpine Valley races as the SWA Team (Southeastern Wisconsin Alpine Team), Heiliger
Huegel (Holy Hill), Scotsland became Olympia, Ausblick and Parks.

In 1968, Little Switzerland was the home hill for Parks racers. Herman Rack was contacted by the
ski school director at Little Switzerland and asked if he would be interested in coaching the team. In
Coach Rack started dry land training which gained Herman quite a reputation - attracting a number
of racing families from the Chicago area. In 2003, Coach Rack retired after 30 years!
Not bad for a guy who said that "he would try it for a year."
