A great history... Back in the winter of 1959, the Milwaukee Journal started ski instruction at Curry, Dretka and Whitnall parks. They also gave instruction at several indoor facilities including Washington and Wilson parks. This led to some limited ski racing at these parks with rope tows. However, in 1963, the program was cancelled. Yet, from that early program, under the guidance of Lee Hinytz, kids from around the various park programs came together to form the Parks Ski Club. Thus, the Club was founded as an independent ski racing organization with Mr. Hinytz as its first president. In 1968, Little Switzerland was the home hill for Parks racers. Herman Rack was contacted by the ski school director at Little Switzerland and asked if he would be interested in coaching the team. In 1971, Herman moved the Parks home to Sunburst where it has been ever since. Then, in 1973, Coach Rack started dry land training which gained Herman quite a reputation - attracting a number of racing families from the Chicago area. In 2003, Coach Rack retired after 30 years! Not bad for a guy who said that "he would try it for a year."
